Why is Lexapro in Pregnancy Category C?

July 19, 2012

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) placed Lexapro (escitalopram) in Category C because the federal health agency was concerned this common prescribed antidepressant medication might have the capacity to harm developing children. Specifically, medical research suggests that during the third trimester Lexapro may elevate the risk of such fetal issues as prematurity and neonatal serotonin syndrome as well as more serious birth defects like persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) and respiratory distress.

Are you a Lexapro patient whose child was born suffering these kinds of symptoms? What your family has experienced may not simply be a medical condition, but a legal reality, too. In fact, some patients and their families have pursued legal actions in an attempt to recover from the harm they’ve suffered and to secure justice for their family.
